Taking slow deliberate breaths will help you calm down and bring your awareness to your breathing instead of your symptoms. Relax Your Body It’s difficult, if not impossible, to be anxious when your body is relaxed. Letting go of tension throughout your body can really help you remain calm during a panic attack.?? Ideals to the contrary must be censored so as not to negatively impact the minds of the youth, the leaders of tomorrow. But what importance do PlatoÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s strict standards have in the classical republican philosophy of government, and how do they compare with todayÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s society in America?It is extremely hard for me as an American to relate to a culture and time where community superceded individuality, and art was nothing more than a means to an end. Since John LockeÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s declaration of natural rights and the revolutions that followed, there has been a shift in focus from utilitari an ideals of the greater good to a passionate advancement of individual liberty. This shift resulted in art being released from the strain of having to benefit society; there could be art for artÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s sake, for expressionÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s sake (whether good or bad). However, to Plato art was another tool that could be used to further the virtues of his republic.Plato faced an interesting dilemma. Education was absolutely necessary for the training of future leaders, but so much of history and literature contained stories of lament and dishonor. Death was a horrible terror; even the strongest heroes lamented over tragedy; the gods were just as immoral and imperfect as humanity. So in order to properly train the young minds in the way of virtue, Plato thought it necessary to censor and rewrite literature to provide positive examples for the guardians. ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"And we must beg Homer and the other poets not to be angry if we st rike out these and similar passages, not because they are unpoetical, or unattractive to the popular ear, but because the greater the poetical charm of them, the less are they meet for the ears of boys and men who are meant to be free, and who should fear slavery more than deathÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (57). Plato wanted to remove the weeping and wailing of Achilles to avoid the ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"danger that the nerves of our guardians may be rendered too excitable and effeminate by themÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (57). The other stories of Homer where obedience is encouraged were okay, however.It was not that Plato necessarily deemed the writings themselves evil, but it was because he wanted to protect the youth from being unduly influenced by characters that succumbed to sorrow and inappropriate bouts of passion. Plato confesses his love for the works of Homer. This is the point at which it is hard as an American to relate because he is reasoning more as a protective father than a s a proponent of liberty. If his ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"childÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? knew death was such a terrible thing, they would lament as Achilles did and not be able to make decisions that their leadership position demanded of them. But if the child cannot relate to sorrow within literature, ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"he will feel such a misfortune far less than anotherÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (58). While many today would view this lack of emotion as somewhat unnatural, Plato believed temperance was more important to instill in the youth than enthusiasm.PlatoÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s ideal man is stable-minded and well-educated. AmericaÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s ideal man is passionate and rich. Plato believed the love of money was something that corrupted the ability to make decisions, as he probably viewed first-hand in the realm of Greek politics. Today, it is still something that corrupts a leaderÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s ability to make decisions. So, in ess ence, few things have changed. But instead of passing laws regulating politicians and lobbyists, Plato chose to attack what he believed was the root of the problem. ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"In the next place, we must not let them be receivers of gifts or lovers of moneyÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (61). He proposed the alteration of literature to make it coincide with virtues that discouraged greed. ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"And therefore let us put an end to such tales, lest they engender laxity of morals among the youngÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (63). Though the artistic value of mythology was undeniable, the integrity of such works was secondary to the education of the guardians.The example of the gods in literature was of great importance to Plato, for if evil was committed by the gods then why should man not follow their example? ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"We will not have them trying to persuade our youth that the gods are the authors of evil, and that heroes are no better than menà Æ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (63) Thus, even more literature had to be censored to keep men from using the godÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s example as an excuse for their own evil. Laughter was also condemned by Plato as being conducive to violence: ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"For a fit of laughter which has been indulged to excess almost always produces a violent reactionÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (59).Classical republicanism puts little faith in the nature of man, while the American capitalist ideal exalts man and grants him the potential to do whatever he wishes. So in one sense, classical republicanism is more down to earth in that it assumes manÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s evil nature. But is censoring reality practical in education, the search for truth? Apparently, to Plato truth is only important in the context of securing the virtues of wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance in the community.He further brushes aside truth in favor of a stronger community: ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"Th en if any one at all is to have the privilege of lying, the rulers of the State should be the persons; and they, in their dealings either with enemies or with their own citizens, may be allowed to lie for the public goodÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (60). Plato grants those in authority the moral right to lie because they have already passed through the system of education and are well aware of the common good.PlatoÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s republic does not immediately promote a rational search for truth, but rather educates man blindly in the ways of virtue, and only then allows him to discover truth after he has been trained properly. Rather than give youth simply the rational means to discover the truth for themselves in the context of reality, evil is censored and only virtues remain. ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"[H]e will justly blame and hate the bad, now in the days of his youth, even before he is able to know the reason why; and when reason comes he will recognize and salute the friend with whom his education has made him long familiarÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? (73).To encourage good and justice, Plato believed one should not tell of the injustice of the world. ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚ÂÅ"Because if I am not mistaken, we shall have to say that about men poets and story-tellers are guilty of making the gravest misstatements when they tell us that wicked men are often happy, and the good miserable; and that injustice is profitable when undetected, but that justice is a manÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s own loss and anotherÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€Ã‚™s gain ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€ these things we shall forbid them to utter, and command them to sing and say the oppositeÃÆ' ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ‚€? There are many debates that occur in our society today. Some of the debates are viewed as being unnecessary. While others are looked at as more serious topics, one of the newest debates is whether or not sexual education should be taught to our youth of today in public schools. Sexual education should be taught to our youth in public schools. Many children aren’t being educated at home to, there is a lack of parent education, adolescents are becoming more sexually active at a younger age, and the number of teen pregnancy is at a lower level than in the past, but still at an alarming rate. An additional point would be parent education. Most don’t think about having the parents of our youth attend a sex education class as well. In this course, the parents would be taught how to educate their children and when. This may be an issue for some parents. If they were not properly educated themselves, how can they realistically educate their children? Gender of Animals in Spanish If you think that masculine nouns in Spanish are always used with referring to males and feminine nouns when referring to females, your assumption would be wrong - especially when talking about animals. Like most nouns, the names for nearly all animals are either masculine or feminine. For example, the word for giraffe, jirafa is feminine, and it can be used when referring to any giraffe, whether male or female. Similarly, rinoceronte is masculine, and it can be used to refer to rhinoceroses of either sex. The same is done with people. El humano (human) is masculine even when referring to a woman or girl, and la persona (person) is feminine even when referring to a man or boy. Animals With Sex-Differentiated Names Some animals have different names for each sex. For example, a perro is a male dog, and a perra is a female dog or bitch. The names dont have to be so similar: a cow is una vaca, while a bull is un toro, even though they refer to the same species of animal. As in these examples, it is common, although not universal, for animals with sex-differentiated names in Spanish to have differentiated names in English as well. Some other animals with different names for the sexes are: el lagarto (male lizard), la lagarta (female lizard)el elefante (male elephant), la elefanta (female elephant)el caballo (stallion), la yegua (mare)el carnero (ram), la oveja (sheep)el gallo (rooster), la gallina (hen)el macho (billy goat), la cabra (nanny goat) Generally, the masculine form can be thought of as the default name for the type of species. Thus if you dont know whether a cat is male or female, its fine to refer to it as un gato. But a cat known to be female can be referred to as una gata. Groups of Animals In the case of animals whose names vary with the sex, if you have a group of animals, some female and some male, they should be referred to by the masculine plural: thus los gatos or los perros. But if the name of the animal is invariably feminine, the feminine must still be used: las jirafas (even for a group of males) or las araà ±as (spiders). In a very few cases where each sex has a different name - they include vaca, cabra, and oveja - the feminine form can be pluralized to represent a group. (The same can be true in English, as cattle might informally be referred to as cows even if bulls are part of the mix.) Macho/Hembra If you need to indicate the sex of an animal with a undifferentiated name, you can add the word macho for male or hembra for female: la jirafa hembra, the female giraffela jirafa macho, the male giraffeel dinosaurio macho, the male dinosaurel dinosaurio hembra, the female dinosaur Note that macho and hembra, however, are traditionally considered to be either nouns or invariable adjectives. Thus they do not vary in form with gender or number: las jirafas hembra, the female giraffeslas jirafas macho, the male giraffes Although treating macho and hembra as invariable adjectives is the grammatically safe thing to do, in real life speakers often make them plural. You should stick to the traditional form in formal writing, however. Personal Names When referring to animals with personal names (such as pets), you should use adjectives whose gender matches the given name of the animal when using that name as the subject of a sentence: Pablo, la jirafa ms alta del zoo, est enfermo. (Pablo, the zoos tallest giraffe, is sick.)Su hmster negro se llama Elena. Elena es muy guapa. (His black hamster is named Elena. Elena is very pretty. Note the change in grammar depending on whether the category name or given name is the grammatical subject.) Deep POV Deep POV Deep POV By Maeve Maddox One of the advantages of belonging to a writers group is that every member has different strengths and areas of expertise. As a result, we are continually learning from one another. For example, I learned about Deep POV (Point of View) from one of my colleagues. I was already familiar with First Person, Third Person, and Omniscient, but the term Deep POV was unfamiliar to me. Now that I know about it, I strive to achieve it, but its not an easy technique to master. Another term for Deep POV is limited Third Person. Its a technique that infuses Third Person POV with the intimacy of First Person Unlike ordinary Third Person, limited Third Person does away with dialogue tags and verbs such as see, notice, understand, feel, realize and think, which suggest telling as opposed to showing. Compare the following passages. Both are written in Third Person. Judy ran down the alley. She thought she could hear footsteps behind her. She realized now that she should have stayed on the main street. Her tight skirt and high heels were slowing her down. Judy picked up her pace. Footsteps sounded in her ears. Imagination? Maybe, but what if that spooky-looking man at the corner had followed her into the alley? Damn this tight skirt. She could hardly move her knees, let alone run. And these heels! What had possessed her to buy anything this high? Momma warned her about vanity. Writing in limited Third Person usually involves the expenditure of more words, but, if done effectively, the extra words add to the readers enjoyment by pulling him more deeply into the events narrated. Deep POV is to the writer what method acting is to the actor. It requires the writer to submerge herself in the character from whose point of view a scene is being seen. It requires a casting off of all inhibitions. The writer becomes the character. A useful exercise for the writer who prefers to write in Third Person is to write a scene in First Person, and then change all the nouns and pronouns to Third Person. In the late 1600’s some writers started recognizing the importance of literature to children. In the 1700’s people’s views about children started changing. Children were treated as per their age and not adults.
